How to Donate a Car in Los Angeles

By Andrew Smith

  • Overview

Donating a car to a charitable or non-profit organization in Los Angeles is an easy way to get rid of a vehicle you no longer want. Depending on where you donate your car, you could help to fund programs for needy or terminally ill children, provide health care for the elderly and the homeless or even assist the Los Angeles Police Department. The charities listed below will accept donations from individuals who live in the city or county of Los Angeles.
    • Step 1

Give your car to the Los Angeles Police Department (see Resources below). The proceeds from the sale of your car will fund different LAPD programs that aren't paid for by the yearly city budget. The LAPD will pick your car up free of charge at your convenience. For more information on how to donate your car to the LAPD, call (888) 934-5273.
    • Step 2

Call the Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (see Resources below). This organization offers social services to children and adults regardless of ethnicity or background. JFS also provides exercise and health care for senior citizens. When you donate to JFS, your car will be picked up for free and all of the paperwork will be done for you. Call (310) 393-0732 or (818) 984-1380 to donate your vehicle to Jewish Family Service.

    • Step 3

Donate your car to the Los Angeles Mission (see Resources below). The Los Angeles Mission provides food and shelter for homeless individuals and families throughout the LA area. Every service provided by the Mission is free of charge. The Mission will accept cars, trucks, RVs and even boats. Your car will be picked up at your convenience for free and you will receive a tax receipt once your vehicle is donated. Call (888) 452-5700 to learn more.
    • Step 4

Contact the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles (see Resources below). Make-A-Wish works to grant the desires, requests or "wishes" of children who battle life-threatening illnesses and diseases. Your vehicle will be towed for free and then fixed up so that it can be sold or auctioned. Once the car is sold, you will receive a letter and tax receipt. Call (877) 227-9474 to donate your vehicle to Make-A-Wish of Greater Los Angeles.
    • Step 5

Donate your car to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles (see Resources below). Big Brothers and Big Sisters are individuals who give their time to mentor "at-risk" children throughout the area. All of the net proceeds from the sale of your car will go to funding programs offered by Big Brothers and Big Sisters. For more information or to donate your car to Big Brothers Big Sisters, call (213) 481-3611 or (888) 306-5437. You can also email the organization at info@bbbslaie.org.
