How to Donate a Car in NJ

By Andrew Smith

  • Overview

Chances are, you've probably seen one of the many "Donate Your Car" billboards while driving along the highways throughout New Jersey. As noted on those billboards and in radio and TV commercials, you may be eligible for a tax deduction and other benefits by donating your car to charity. More important, however, is the fact that your car donation will help the charitable organization of your choice. Here is how you can donate a car in New Jersey.
    • Step 1

Contact the Children's Home Society of New Jersey. CHS works to find homes for orphaned and abandoned children in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The organization also funds educational programs for parents and children, as well as health care for families that cannot afford any. Children's Home Society will accept most vehicles, and the charity offers free vehicle pick-up. You will be given a receipt and tax form when your car is picked up. To learn more about donating your car to CHS, call (609) 695-6274.
    • Step 2

Give your car to Kars 4 Kids. When you donate your vehicle to Kars 4 Kids in New Jersey, you receive a tax deduction and a vacation voucher. Your car donation will help J.O.Y. For Our Youth, an organization that provides such services as food, shelter, clothing, educational programs and tutoring to children in need throughout the state of New Jersey. To donate your car to Kars 4 Kids, all you need is the keys to the vehicle and the title. For more information on Kars 4 Kids in New Jersey, call (201) 633-9668.

    • Step 3

Consider donating your car to Habitat for Humanity in New Jersey. Habitat for Humanity builds homes for families who live in unsafe housing and those who have lost their homes completely. Habitat for Humanity will pick up your keys, title and the vehicle once you agree to donate your car to the organization, making the process very simple. Donations made to Habitat for Humanity are tax-deductible. To learn more, find your local Habitat for Humanity branch on the contact list in Resources.
    • Step 4

Donate your car to the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic: New Jersey Unit. RFB&D uses profits from vehicle donations to purchase supplies like audio textbooks for children who are either visually impaired or blind, as well as students who are dyslexic. As with the other charities, RFB&D will pick up your car for you. Once the car is sold at an auction, you will be sent a letter notifying you of the car's value for tax purposes. Call (866) 941-4483 to learn more about donating to the organization.

    • Tip: You can donate your car to any of these New Jersey charities even if the vehicle is not running.
