Find a charity to which you want to donate your car. Charities accepting car donations in the state of Maryland need to be registered as wholesale dealers with the Motor Vehicle Administration (see Resources below).

Contact the charity and ask for their requirements. Companies that provide car donation services in Washington County have different requirements and forms you need to fill out. Call the company or fill out their contact form online to make sure you meet their requirements. An example is Action Donation Services (see Resources below)

Have clear title. Make sure you have clear title to your car as you will need to fill out a title transfer form. If your car was financed, you will need proof that your car loan has been paid off.

Arrange for pick up. Most car donation services and charities pick up your car. For example, you can call ADS at 866-244-8464 to schedule a free pick up in Washington County, MD.

Have an idea of what your car is worth and get the appropriate documentation for tax time.You can estimate the fair market value using Kelley Blue Book (see Resources) or you may wait for the car donation company to sell your car and send you documentation showing what the fair market value is. You are allowed to claim up to fair market value as a tax deduction.
