How to Donate Cars in Austin, Texas

By Justine Depalma

  • Overview

Donating a car to charity in Austin, Texas, helps not only the charity but also the donor. The charity receives a car to use in its programs or gain money from the sale. The donor receives a federal income tax deduction for the value of the car. Many charities in Austin take cars as donations.
    • Step 1

Find a charity. There are hundreds of organizations in Austin that accept donated cars. For example, the Humane Society of Austin works with the Car Program to accept donated cars. The Humane Society receives 70 percent of the proceeds from car sales to use in its programs. The Humane Society of Austin is a no-kill shelter that saves the lives of thousands of homeless dogs and cats. To donate a car, call (512) 646-7387, ext. 116.
    • Step 2

Consider donating to Special Kids Fund, a program that funds programs for disabled and at-risk children. Electric wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment are available through its programs. Special Kids funds unique programs, including summer camps, and provides volunteers to give respite to caregivers of developmentally disabled children. Arrange car donations by calling 1 (866) GIVETOKIDS (448-3865).

    • Step 3

Contact Volunteers of America. This organization operates programs for the elderly, low-income families and disabled children. Its car donation program is a major source of funding for its programs. Car donations can be arranged online (see Resources below) or by calling 1 (800) 407-2600.
    • Step 4

Sign over the title to the charity when you deliver the car. The charity or its dealer will file the title with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Also, give the vehicle registration to the charity. The charity will need a signed vehicle title application. The application is available on the Department of Transportation website.
    • Step 5

File a notice of vehicle transfer with the Texas Department of Transportation. The notice will be evidence that title transferred if parking tickets accumulate or if there is an accident with the donated car.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Car title
    • Photographs of the car
    • Letter of determination
    • Tip: Take photographs of the car to prove the donation if audited by the IRS.
    • Tip: Ask the charity if it is a 501c(3) organization. The IRS allows deductions for car donations only if the organization has the 501c(3) designation. Get a copy of the IRS letter of determination for your records.
    • Warning:
    • Consult with a tax preparer to make certain the donation is properly documented.
