How to Donate a Junk Car in Orlando

By Justine Depalma

  • Overview

Is there an old car sitting in your driveway? Do you have a car that is ready for the scrap heap? Rather than paying someone to haul it away, donate your junker to an Orlando charity. Charities work with dealers that resell junk cars at auction. The charity receives a portion of the sales proceeds, and the donor receives a federal income tax deduction.
    • Step 1

Find a charity. There are hundreds of Orlando based charities that accept donated cars. For example, WMFE, (1-866-963-3288) Orlando's public broadcasting station, resells donated cars and receives 70% of the proceeds for programs. Donating a car helps keep quality public television and radio on the air. Online forms are on the WMFE website found in the resource section.
    • Step 2

Consider donating the car to Forest Lake Academy, a private school in Orlando. Its car donation program raises money for books, classroom renovations, and supplies. Forest Lake works with a dealer that will tow away your junk car and sell it with a portion of the proceeds going to Forest Lake. Contact Forest Lake's car donation program at 407-598-5555 or through its website listed in the resources section.

    • Step 3

Contact Habitat for Humanity's car donation service, at 1-877-277-4344. Habitat for Humanity allows donors to direct funds to their local Habitat affiliate. Funding from donated cars supports programs to provide housing for low-income families.
    • Step 4

Find your title and fill it out. On the title, you are the seller and the charity is the buyer. The Florida Department of Highways and Motor Vehicles website has forms for duplicate titles.
    • Step 5

Deliver the car to the charity or call for pickup. Remove the license plates and take them back to the Florida Department of Highways and Motor Vehicles. You cannot put the plates on another car unless you fill out a transfer form and pay a fee. Cancel your insurance on the donated car.
    • Step 6

Keep a copy of the sales documents you receive from the charity. The I.R.S. limits deductions to the amount of the sale. Attach a copy of the sales receipt to your tax return.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Tip: Contact the charity and make certain that it is a 501 (c) (3) organization since I.R.S rules only allow deductions to official charities. Ask for a copy of the I.R.S. letter of determination for your records.
    • Warning:
    • Consult with your tax preparer before donating a car to make certain you are following I.R.S. rules.
