An example of dressing in layers if you're go out for a day hike, you start early in the morning and in the desert environment there is a big difference between the nighttime or the dawn, low and the afternoon high temperature. If you want to start out early right away on the dawn, you are going to need a sweater, a police vest, or something like that and may be a pair of pants. As the day progresses and it gets warmer, you might want to have the kind of pants that zip off and turn into shorts. Take your warm coat off. Basically it is just adjusting what you are wearing so that you are constantly comfortable with the ambient temperature in the air.

I would say it's crucial in the desert because in areas with very low humidity you have a big difference between the daytime high and the nighttime low. In the east, where it is more humid, there isn't that huge disparity. Sometimes in the desert there is up to 40 degrees difference between the high and the low in one day. In the East with a relative humidity of 40%-50%, that difference might be only 10 or 15 degrees. I would say it is crucial in the desert to pack layers. Because the heat is directly tied to the sun and when that sun goes down it begins to cool off just immediately.
