Drink Recipes For Cinco De Mayo

Planning on hosting a Cinco de Mayo fiesta at your house this year? Try some of these Mexican-inspired drinks to wow your guests.

On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French (who were trying to establish their own French ruler in Mexico) at the Battle of Puebla. It was a treacherous battle, but one that was eventually won by Mexico. Every May 5th, or Cinco de Mayo, as it is more often called, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans celebrate in honor of this victory over the French. If you are planning on hosting a Cinco de Mayo celebration, here are some Mexican-inspired drinks to help get your guests in the mood for a fiesta.

Apple Margarita

What kind of Mexican celebration can you have without tequila and margaritas? In a blender, blend three quarters of an ounce of tequila, three ounces of apple puree, four ounces of margarita mix (can be easily found at a liquor store or your local grocery store), half an ounce of triple sec and ice. Blend the mixture until it forms a frozen margarita consistence and serve in a pre-chilled margarita glass for a yummy and fruity drink.

Cactus Margarita

Mexico and cacti often go hand in hand. Here is another margarita recipe for you to add to your repertoire. In a blender, combine one ounce of cream of coconut, one and a quarter ounces of your favorite tequila, half an ounce of pineapple (from concentrate), five ounces of margarita mix and ice. Blend the mixture until slightly smooth.

Old-Fashioned Margarita

Sure it's fun to liven up a regular margarita with different flavors, but, for some, nothing quite compares to an old-fashioned margarita. In a cocktail shaker, combine one ounce of tequila, a quarter of an ounce of triple sec, the juice of half a lime and ice. Use a lime to moisten the rim of a margarita glass. Dip the rim in coarse salt. Strain the mixture into your margarita glass.

Mexican Cocktail

In a cocktail shaker, combine two ounces of sweet and sour mix, a quarter ounce of triple sec, one ounce of whiskey and crushed ice. Shake well and strain the mixture into a glass.

Classic Cinco de Mayo Drink

Celebrate the colors of the Mexican flag (red, white and green) with this classic cocktail. In a cocktail shaker, mix one ounce of grenadine, one ounce of sweetened lime juice, two and a half ounces of white tequila and tons of ice. Shake the mixture well and strain into a glass.

Margaritas are fantastic for Cinco de Mayo, but a Mexican party is not a true fiestsa without some fruity sangria to drink. In a large punch bowl, combine one bottle of red or white wine, two tablespoons of sugar, a few dozen maraschino cherries (with some juice) and thin slices of one orange, one lemon and one lime. Cover the mixture with plastic wrap and let it chill overnight in the refrigerator. Before your party, bring out the punch bowl full of sangria and add a quart of club soda. Sangria is a wonderfully fruity and bold drink that all of your guests will love. Be sure to put in a piece of fruit into each cup when serving the sangria.
