Overview
Drug and/or alcohol addiction is a serious problem across the world, and California is no exception. Fortunately, there are a number of resources for those needing drug rehabilitation centers in California. The centers are usually 12-step oriented, though there are some exceptions to this approach. No matter what someone's religion or financial status is, there is a program in California that can help him or her combat a drug or alcohol addiction.
12-Step Approach
Many drug rehabilitation centers in California use the 12-step approach in at least some of their programs. Modeled after groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, the 12 steps are designed to teach people they are not at fault for their addiction and can trust any power outside of themselves for a reprieve. While it is not geared toward a specific religion, some people have raised issues with a 12-step approach because of the mention of the word "God" in the steps. However, 12-step programs maintain that the use of "God" is meant for any power outside the alcoholic or addict.
Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs
People without insurance, with limited insurance or with other financial problems will want to get in touch with the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (see Resources section) to find out how they can get into a drug rehabilitation center. Unfortunately, sometimes these processes can take a while because so many people in the state require help to get over a drug or alcohol problem.
Psychiatric Commitment Option
When someone is using drugs or alcohol to the point that he is suicidal, homicidal or at risk of hurting himself or others, it is essential to consider short-term psychiatric commitment. This can often facilitate a faster transfer to a drug rehabilitation center in California, especially when insurance or finances are a problem. The way to do this is to go to any hospital emergency room and ask to be placed under a 72-hour hold. Once you are in psychiatric commitment, you will be forced to remain drug and alcohol free, given therapy, and a social worker and doctor will advocate to get you into drug rehabilitation.
