Overview
Pick up an entertainment magazine or surf TV stations focused on sports or media news and it's a good bet you'll see at least one story about a celebrity checking into or being released from a rehab facility. Drug rehab is a fact of life on every social level these days, and while such news blasts offer fodder for a celeb-obsessed public, anyone who has ever sought help for drug dependence knows that the subject is no entertaining matter. In Kentucky, phone books and state-based website rehab listings are long and daunting. Choosing the right program shouldn't add difficulties to an already stressful situation.
Hope Center
Hope Center of Lexington, Kentucky, has morphed from soup kitchen/homeless shelter to a pre-eminent provider of rehab services to the people who can least afford it: impoverished Kentucky addicts. A program consisting of NA meetings, addiction education, recovery and life skills has lead to an impressive number of success stories: 60 percent of the men treated at Hope don't relapse. Once clean, former addicts may qualify to move from the 96-bed treatment facility to Hill Rise Place, a residence that paves the way for addicts readjusting to life in mainstream society. A women's recovery program was launched in 2002. Hope is diversifying its rehab efforts by supporting new ventures created to treat the area's growing Latino population and dual addictions are treated here, as well. Aggressive fundraising and government grants help keep Hope afloat, so if you need treatment and have no resources, you may wish to check out this program.
Chrysalis House
Chrysalis House has plenty of history to recommend it. Kentucky's oldest and largest licensed substance-abuse program for women and their children (doors opened in 1978), Chrysalis House has achieved success rates of recovery more than double the national average. Licensed by the Kentucky Department of Health and Human Services and recognized by STARS for Kids Now, Chrysalis is routinely evaluated by the Center for Drug and Alcohol Research affiliated with the University of Kentucky. A vast array of licensed, certified counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers highly trained in the treatment of mothers juggling children and addiction gives families an extra boost of help, Chrysalis patients receive information and education about social dynamics that lead to drug dependence, including how to break bonds of domestic violence. Job training, housing location assistance and job placement--as well as credit counseling--give women and their children a better than average chance of long-term recovery.
The Ridge
Lexington's The Ridge accepts referrals from professionals, addicts and their families 24/7. An assessment team recommends appropriate levels of care based on each person's diagnosis and once the initial detox or enculturation period concludes, the addict's family is called upon to be an integral part of the recovery process. Administrative help, in the form of obtaining pre-certification from commercial insurance programs or other managed care plans are undertaken by The Ridge so the patient and his family can focus on the recovery process. This facility accepts Medicaid for addicts under the age of 22 and treats the elderly served by Medicare. Payment plans are commonplace, so if you need help but don't have the cash on hand to cover your expenses, Ridge staff will help with that. By the way, The Ridge accepts addicts who volunteer for treatment but they also treat men and women under court order to clean up.

The Importance of Treatment at the Right Facility
Kentucky's substance abuse situation is unique to the state. Wilderness areas like the Daniel Boone National Forest have been repeated sites for marijuana cultivation. On average, Kentucky eradicates 522,957 marijuana plants annually. This creates a nightmare situation for those seeking to escape drug dependency. With a huge spread in recidivism rates for addictive personalities, choosing the right rehab program can mean the difference between permanent recovery and the next stint in rehab. Kentucky is rich in addiction treatment centers but if you refine your search to those that will appeal to the personality, values and interests of the addict, success rates have been shown to be higher.
