There are many different types of drugs. The only drugs that aren't addictive are certain non-addictive medications or prescription medications. Some prescription medications are addictive, some are not. But statistically alcohol is the most abused drug probably because it is more readily available and it's also legal. That's why the issue of legalizing marijuana has become controversial. I believe that if marijuana was legalized then more people would be addicted to it. Now even for instance, tobacco smoking is a serious issue among addicts because even if an alcoholic or a drug addict recovers from their addiction and they stop drinking or they stop using drugs, they seem to gravitate to all the legalized drugs like caffeine and nicotine.

Recovering alcohol and drug addicts just gravitate to drinking coffee excessively or they could smoke excessively. In fact, statistics indicated 92% of substance abuses also smoke cigarettes which is disturbing. That may have something to do with drug addicts just having an addictive personality or the fact certain drugs like caffeine and nicotine have been recognized as addictive drugs. Now there may be some drugs that may be more addictive and may take less time to become addicted to them. Someone might drink alcohol for years before they become an alcoholic. There may be some drugs like cocaine or heroin where after a few uses you are addicted. Some more hardcore drugs may have certain properties that may cause them to create more of an addicting effect than others. Once you're an addicted drinker, you can never go back to being a responsible drinker. A responsible drinker in my mind is someone who is capable of having a glass of wine with dinner or having a couple of beers with their friends watching a football game without became intoxicated. That's a responsible drinker. That's why alcohol is legal. It is possible to consume alcohol without being addicted to it. Certain hardcore drugs like cocaine and heroin are virtually impossible to not get addicted. I don't know any responsible cocaine users. If you are using cocaine you are addicted. Someone could have a glass of wine every night with their dinner and still not be addicted to alcohol.

There are different severities in terms of the powerful effect of health. Something could be more addictive than others. We have been staying here at the office: once you are a pickle, you can't go back to being a cucumber.

It is the same thing with the alcoholics. Once you are an alcoholic, you can't go back being a responsible drinker or a person who drinks socially. An alcoholic is going to drink and get drunk every time they drink. A responsible drinker is capable of having one or two drinks without overdoing it. If you are in recovery from alcohol and you take that one sip or have that one drink, you are back into your addiction to alcohol. You could be an alcoholic and then recover for 5, 10, or 20 years. When you have the one drink, you are back into it. That's how addiction works.
