Earning A College Degree Online

Getting an online college degree can be the best way to balance your personal and career goals like you never imagined.

Believing in your ability to succeed at pursuing an on-line college degree is the first stumbling block to overcome. Even if you think you don't have the time or self-discipline to do so.

Once you have decided you would like to get a college education using online resources, you will need to think of how to best manage your time so you can be efficient and achieve the goals you set for yourself.

Find out first when your instructors expect your assignments to be completed and whether or not there are mandatory group chat sessions. Gather up your syllabus and take a look to see what the term's layout is.

Next, it is helpful to make a weekly and monthly list of your assignments and conferences. Each week may vary as will each month. Either a formalized publishing program on your computer or a regular store-bought calendar will work. For the weekly calendar, list the exact times, dates and what assignment is due with each class. Also, be sure there is enough room to add any notes that are pertinent for the classes. For this reason, the weekly calendar needs to be more spacious than the monthly one. If you are taking more than one class list each class with a different colored pen or pencil. For the monthly calendar, do the same, with briefer notes on what is due and when.

Once you have written down your term's schedule you next need to consider what time of day is best for doing schoolwork. Look at when you feel like you are most awake and able to concentrate seriously on your work. Then look at your work or family schedule. If there seems to be some conflict in when you feel like you can concentrate and when the kids arrive home for school, for instance, think of how you might be able to break your studies up throughout the day or an activity your kids can work on at home so you can utilize your free time efficiently. If that is not an option, consider having someone help with child care for a few hours at least one day a week.

Going to college through your computer at home has more flexibility in scheduling and keeping to a rigid schedule is not necessary. Ideally, you would "go to school" at a regular time if it works into your schedule that way, because that makes sticking with your studies easier. The more flexibility you allow the more likely it becomes that your motivation will lax and deadlines will pass quickly.

But if you really need flexibility, you should consider each week individually and what plans there are and then work around it. Keep your personal appointment book nearby so you can glance at your schedule and see how to fit study time around that. Once you master the juggling act of balancing personal and school time, you will be amazed at how easy getting your degree is.
