It has a major affect on children. In fact, there is a self-help group called ALANON which is geared towards people who grow up in the family where a parent or sibling is around. They are pick on the same characteristics of an alcoholic or drug addict just from being in that environment. They may start to get very emotionally affected and it definitely becomes a hindrance in the development of children because of the dysfunction that is constantly around surrounding the alcoholic or the drug addict. It definitely affects them from the behavioral sense.
That type of individual has to be treated differently because the child of an alcoholic or drug abuse may be more genetically predisposed to becoming an addict himself. Even if they don't become an alcohol or drug addict, they still may need to be treated because of all the dysfunction that existed in the family could create other emotional or behavioral problems.
