Well, it's not how the windows work. It is mainly how the glass works. The reason for this is that a window is mostly glass. Most windows are about 80-85% glass. So, only 15-20 % of a window is the actual frame. The difference between a regular window and an energy efficient window is the glass. The difference has to come in through the glass. With the higher R value glass, the window is better at insulating. The higher the value, the insulating quality of the glass improves. They have a couple of different processes of classifying the glass. They use what is called Low E glass, which means that the sun's rays reflect off the glass. Usually, there is a metal coating, a transparent metal coating, that the sun's heat rays reflect off the window. The rays bounce back outside of the house. It also helps by capturing and keeping your energy inside. It's a like an invisible mirror. It will keep the energy outside or inside the house.
