According to the National Electric Code (NEC), GFI receptacles are required in every bathroom. GFI and arc fault protection are a major safety issues in the home. The NEC states, for GFI in Article 210.8, that GFI protection is required for electrical circuits serving the following areas of the home:


1. Bathrooms.
2. Garages and out buildings used for storage or work areas (not required for garages converted to living space)



3. Outdoors- unless the outlet is not readily accessible, i.e.. in the eve of the house designed as the connection point for Christmas lightings.
4. Crawl spaces.
5. Unfinished basements i.e.: storage areas, work areas, and the like.
6. Kitchens- where the receptacles are installed to serve the countertop surfaces.
7. Wet bar sinks - where the receptacles are installed to serve the countertop surfaces and are located within 6 ft. of the outside edge of the wet bar sink.
8. Boathouses.

The Arc fault protection is a new requirement for bedrooms. It is required for 15 and 20 amp branch circuits serving all bedrooms in the home.
