To combine the lye and the water you need a hard plastic spoon, rubber glove, a face mask and some protective eyewear. Then when you go to mix the lye in your oil together you need another large spoon. You need a thermometer that's capable of measuring between 75 and 120 degrees. I found the best ones are the meat thermometers. You need a four-coat stainless steel pan. You don't want to use aluminium or Teflon because that can corrode when it's in contact with the lye. You'll want an electric hand blender, if it's called a stick blender. You don't want to use the regular ones or you'll make soap wood. A stick blender is straight up and down. A stainless steel or glass mixing bowl is needed if you want to add herbs or other additives to the soap. you have to take some out, mix it and then pour it back into the main solution.
When you combine the water and the lye, it's going to go up to 200 degrees on its own. A real important thing to know is that you never pour the water into the lye. You always have your cold water in the plastic container and you pour the lye into that container. Otherwise, if you pour water into lye, it has a volcano effect and it goes all over and you have got a mess.
