BIOGRAPHY
Eugene Ionesco, poet and playwright, was born in Slatina, Romania. His mother was French, and his father was Romanian. He spent most of his childhood in France. He was educated at the University of Bucharest where he studied French. After receiving his degree he began to teach and to write poetry.
Ionesco wrote his first play, LA CANTATRICE CHAUVE (THE BALD SOPRANO), when he was 41. This play along with his subsequent plays initiated the technique known as Theatre of the Absurd. One of his most successful plays was LE ROI SE MEURT (EXIT THE KING) which was produced in 1962.
Eugene Ionesco died in Paris, France in 1994.
