We have fabulous agricultural fairs in summer and fall. We have a ski jumping championship in Southbury in February that's always wonderful, and the Tour of Connecticut which is a professional bike race held every May. We have the Litchfield Open House Tour on the second Saturday in July where private homes open to the public for tours. Money generated from the event goes to help to fund the School for Troubled Boys. We also have three major antiques shows in the fall. The Antiques in a Cow Pasture Show is held in Salisbury. The New Town Antique Festival and the Washington Depot Antiques Festival have been called the best antique shows in the country. Mark Twain lived in Redding, Connecticut, and each year for nearly 50 years, the Mark Twain Library has put on a phenomenal book sale. In New Town we also have a rug-hooking convention. It's really a beautiful event.
We have a town nearby called Bethlehem that, of course, always has a Christmas Festival the first Friday and Saturday of December. It's a town fair with over 70 arts and crafts booths, hot cider, and roasted chestnuts. There is also the Abby of Virginia Lourdes in Bethlehem, which is a group of cloistered Benedictine nuns. On the property of the Abby of Virginia Lourdes, you will find an 18th century Neapolitan Crèche with 80 porcelain figures dressed in silk bouquets that tell the story of Christmas. You can also bring your Christmas cards to Bethlehem and to have them hand-stamped. Many of our historic points of interest decorate historic houses that are open to the public for the holidays.
