Exercises for People With Cerebral Palsy

By Contributing Writer

  • Overview

Regular exercise is important for everyone. However, people dealing with cerebral palsy especially need the physical and mental uplift that consistent physical activity can bring. While there is no one exercise regimen that is ideal for all CP sufferers, it is possible to identify several exercises that are beneficial for people at different stages of the disease. The choice of exercises can be combined to create a daily exercise program for just about anyone suffering with some degree of cerebral palsy.
    • Step 1

Begin with basic chair aerobics. Performed while seated in a chair that allows the arms to move freely, the aerobics focus on stimulating the muscles in the upper body. This in turn helps promote a healthy heart and set of lungs. Chair aerobics can include stretching exercises, twirling the arms, and throwing punches with each arm.
    • Step 2

Consider using exercise bands. Shaped like large rubber bands, exercise equipment of this type can be attached to a pole or other stationary object. It is then possible to use the arms or legs to slowly stretch the band and hold the position for a short period. This type of resistance exercise helps with building strength and maintaining healthy bones.

    • Step 3

Dance to some music. Choose any type of music that you enjoy and that has a beat fast enough to encourage you to move. Be less concerned about form and focus your attention on getting a good cardiovascular workout and moving your muscles. This exercise will lift enhance your mood as well as strengthen the heart and lungs.
    • Step 4

Climb some stairs. This can be accomplished using a stair step machine or by climbing up and down a short flight of stairs. Stair climbing helps build endurance, works the leg muscles, and also is beneficial for the leg bones.
    • Step 5

Take a walk. Speed is not as important as the actual process of advancing by moving one foot in front of the other. If necessary, use a cane, walker, or crutches. The focus is to work the legs. Walk around the home, the yard or the block, depending on your level of endurance.
    • Step 6

Use free weights. Simple arm curls performed with light weights can be done while sitting and watching television. Arm lifts while holding the weights will also help stretch and develop the upper body.
    • Step 7

Go wheeling. This is simply moving forward in a wheelchair using the arms to turn the wheels or using the legs to walk the chair forward. Make sure to wheel on a smooth surface, such as a floor or sidewalk. Both approaches work very well with a traditional wheelchair. As a bonus, it is possible to stop and rest from time to time if necessary.
    • Skill: Moderate
    • Tip: Remember that the idea of exercising is to enhance the quality of life and maintain as much control of the body as possible. This means choosing exercises that are appropriate for the condition of the individual living with cerebral palsy and planning the exercise regimen accordingly. Performing the daily exercises with a friend will make the exercise period less of a chore and more of a social occasion.
    • Warning:
    • While a little competition among friends is fine, don't get carried away. What is beneficial for one person may be dangerous for someone else. Before implementing any exercise program when cerebral palsy is a factor, okay the exercises with a physician. Also, do not increase repetitions without first consulting your doctor.
