Design and furniture literally goes back to the rock. In South Africa, 28,000 years ago, people were painting leopards on the walls of caves, and cavemen actually had larger rocks to sit on. They did not need anything definitive because a human being is biped. Human bodies are designed to walk around and lie down, but we weren't designed specifically to sit. So chairs are somewhat modern products for the purpose of comfort. The first chairs were made of wood 3,000 to 5,000 years ago. You begin seeing the most powerful people with the most social skills fashioning chairs as a status symbol. We then move through several different periods of nondescript furnishing - basically just a tree stump cut down and a little platform to fit the buttocks.
