Facial cosmetic surgery is becoming more prevalent in our society. It seems you can turn on the television any given night and watch a show that "transforms" a patient with multiple cosmetic surgeries. This trend goes to show that Americans have become more and more comfortable with the idea of using surgery to alter one's face and body in order to have better self-esteem.
"Facial cosmetic or facial plastic surgery is a surgery that includes both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and it targets those areas of the face, eyes, nose and neck. Cosmetic surgery typically refers to more aesthetic surgery, a surgery to improve appearance or to change the appearance of something such as a nose, eyes or eyebrows." said Charles M. Boyd who has his M.D., M.B.A., and F.A.C.S. He has been a plastic surgeon for more than 13 years.
"Plastic and reconstructive surgery, however, can involve reconstruction, removing cancerous tissues or moving tissue around. Those procedures are not necessarily cosmetic but more to restore form and function of the face" Boyd said.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery collected data and put out statistics on cosmetic surgery for 2003. Their data showed that the use of surgical and non-surgical procedures increased twenty percent in 2003. In 2003, over 8.3 million procedures were performed! It doesn't look like facial cosmetic surgery is so taboo anymore. Eyelid surgery is one of the most performed cosmetic surgeries as 267,627 patients went under the knife to have those lids reshaped. The rhinoplasty was also one of the most popular procedures as 172,420 people went in and came out with a newly-shaped nose.
The ryhtidectomy is one of the more well known surgeries. It is commonly known as the facelift. This is a surgery that is able to give the face a much more youthful appearance by removing fatty tissue, excess skin and tightening muscles.
One does not necessarily have to undergo the knife to get a facial cosmetic procedure. There are some options aside from the nip and tuck. There are procedures such as Botulin toxin injections, known to most as Botox, in which a neurotoxin is injected under the skin to relax areas of the face to smooth away lines. The effects of this procedure are temporary, four to six months, but the procedure can be repeated.
Microdermabrasion is also a popular facial cosmetic procedure. Using light abrasion this procedure can effective remove the outermost layer of the skin removing scars and fine wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is fairly simple process that can be carried out in places such as spas and requires no anesthesia.
A 19th century American plastic surgeon named John Orlando Roe once said, "how much valuable talent (had) been...buried from human eyes, lost to the world and society by reason of embarrassment...caused by the conscious, or in some cases, unconscious influence of some physical infirmity or deformity or unsightly blemish."
Facial cosmetic surgery has been able to open new worlds for people that once were too insecure. It appears that cosmetic surgery is not a fad but a permanent fixture that is able to liberate people.
