Yearly fall home maintenance checklist including gutter, roof, siding, and window upkeep along with foundation inspection and insect infestation
Houses must be readied for winter's cold in somewhat the same manner people store away their summer accoutrements and bring out of storage their wools and other winter wear. A checklist can help new and seasoned homeowners complete fall maintenance in a timely and comprehensive manner.
Gutters and Downspouts
Clean gutters and downspouts. If yours are removable, take them down and put into storage. If any are in need of repair or replacement, make note so you will have the needed parts when spring arrives.
Roof, Siding, and Windows
Do a visual outside inspection of your roof and siding. Be on the lookout for any missing or damaged shingles, and areas around chimneys and vent pipes that may need sealant. Check siding for cracks, peeling paint, and openings around windows and doors that may need re-caulking or weather stripping.
Chimney
Chimneys should be checked for any debris that could cause a blockage, and cleaned before the heavy-use time of winter.
Storm Doors
If your house is equipped with storm doors or windows check the condition of these, make any needed repairs and install.
Foundation and Insect Infestation
Check around the base of the house if you have had heavy rains, extreme dry spells, or have done any type of landscaping. Check for cracks in the foundation and look for any ground areas that might allow water to pool next to your foundation. Make any necessary repairs or alterations. At the same time, check for any type of insect infestation.
Heating
Your furnace should be checked and cleaned by a professional. Ductwork should be cleaned and checked for any repairs that may be required. Thermostats should be checked for accuracy and replaced if needed. If a humidifier is used during the winter months, ready it by changing the filter and cleaning.
Water Taps
If yours are not freeze-proof, they should be drained and water should be turned off. If you regularly remove your outside faucet completely, do so before the first freeze.
Storage
If you have any pots, outdoor containers, yard ornaments, etc., that will not withstand the cold of winter, empty, clean, and store. Hoses should be drained and put away. Lawn and patio furniture should be cleaned and readied for storage. Swimming pool maintenance should be performed.
Tree Trimming and Raking
If any trees have branches that need trimming, have this done before winter. Any tree that is going to need removal should be taken care of before winter also, as ice buildup or heavy winter winds may cause damage that could be avoided by removal or trimming. Leaves should be raked and removed from your lawn. Shrubbery should also be trimmed back from the house to help keep moisture buildup from occurring. If you will be adding any trees or shrubs to your yard, check to see if any are recommended for fall planting.
Garden
Dig up any bulbs that cannot stay in the ground over the winter months, and plant those that need to be planted before winter sets in.
Bird Houses and Feeders
Unneeded birdhouses should be cleaned and put away. Feeders that are needed for winter-feeding should be put out.
Chipmunks and Squirrels
Fall sometimes brings a flood of chipmunks and squirrels into yards looking for entrances to attics, garages, and basements. Make sure that no entry points are available, and fix or replace any screens that are already in place to keep them at bay.
