Jewelry can be a fabulous and romantic anniversary gift -- just make sure you get the right metal, that you add a personal touch, and that the piece of jewelry is something she will wear.

Jewelry is a wonderful anniversary gift for husbands to give to their wives. Almost all women love jewelry, and they especially love receiving jewelry from their husbands. Here are some tips for husbands buying jewelry:

METALS

Let’s face it: lots of men aren’t paying attention to what their wives are wearing. Before heading out to the jewelry shop to pick up a gift for your wife, do some observing and snooping. Most women either like to wear pretty much all gold jewelry or they wear pretty much all silver jewelry. What’s a good rule of thumb if you are unsure and you don’t have much time to nose around your wife’s jewelry box? Her engagement ring and wedding band – if she has a gold rings, she a gold girl, and if she has silver rings, she’s a silver girl. (Yet another plus to marriage – there’s a simpler way to determine what metal her jewelry should be!) Even if you see something at the jewelry store that you like, don’t get it unless it is the right metal for your wife. If you get her something that isn’t going to match anything else in her jewelry collection, then she’s never going to wear it. The only way you can get away with switching the metal preference is if you get an entire set of jewelry – necklace, bracelet, earrings, and ring – and that’s a pretty expensive undertaking to go for, especially considering that your wife clearly prefers the other metal anyway. Most wives will tell you that they love whatever you give them, but don’t be fooled -- women know what they like, and you should find out what that is before you make a purchase!

PERSONALIZATION

It is a nice touch if you add some sort of personalization to the jewelry gift that you give to your wife. Engraving is one of the best ways to personalize a gift. You could personalize it with your wedding date, your names, or a line from a poem or song that is special to the two of you. You could also personalize it with the pet name that you call your wife or simply with the words, “I Love You.” Lockets are a great jewelry gift that can be personalized. You can engrave whatever you want onto the back of the locket, and on the inside, you can put pictures of the two of you.

BIRTH STONES

Birthstones are another great way to add a personal touch to your anniversary present. There are several ways to incorporate birthstones. You could get a three-stone ring – the middle stone should be the stone color for the month that the two of you got married, the stone on one side should be your wife’s birthstone, and the one on the other side should be your birthstone. If you have children, you could include their birthstones as well. You could also get birthstone pendants that hand from a silver or gold chain necklace or bracelet.

STYLE

When buying a jewelry gift for your wife, keep her personal style in mind. If your wife is a devout jeans and a t-short kind of girl and she doesn’t like lots of flash, don’t get her anything that is too gaudy or over-the-top. Instead, stick with simpler pieces, like tennis bracelets or small earrings. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel here. If you are thinking of getting something that is totally unlike anything that you have ever seen your wife wear, think again. If you are deeply confused about the selection process, consider asking a friend of hers or her sister to help you pick something out.
