What is a child safety tracking device and does my child need one?

A child safety tracking device serves to monitor the location of your child, so that in case of emergency, your child can be found.

Being a parent is a stressful full-time job, and it is understandable that as a parent, you spend a large amount of time worrying about your children. That’s why it is no wonder that child safety tracking devices are gaining popularity and acceptance in the marketplace. There are actually several different types of devices that can be used to monitor your child’s location. While some people are wary of these devices, citing that they may lead to a more invasive tracking device that would threaten personal privacy and security, many others are proponents of the innovations. With all of the horror stories on the news about missing children and kidnappings, it is not at all surprising that there is a demand from consumers for products that can help parents to keep an extra eye on their kids.

It hardly seems illogical for you to buy a safety tracking device for your child. If you want to have the security of knowing that you would be more prepared if a “worst case scenario” situation were to arise, then you should go ahead and purchase one of the devices. If you are the parent of a child with a disability such as blindness or a psychological impairment, then these devices can help you with your special needs child. There are some devices that are like a wrist watch that locks onto your child’s wrist. Wherify is a company that produces such devices. When your child has the watch on, you are able to pinpoint the location of the watch, and therefore the location of your kid. Also, there are such features as an emergency “panic” button for your child to push in a dangerous situation, and there is a detector that will be notified if the watch is removed. There are also devices that you can incorporate with your child’s cellular phone. ULocate is a company that sells the cell phone tracking devices, and their service allows you to see your child’s phone’s location in real time on the internet by showing you a map of your child’s location on Mapquest.

In reality, the chances that you will ever truly “need” a child safety tracking device are slim to none – thankfully. However, if you are pragmatic, then why not just get one to safeguard against the slim chance that you do need to find your child? If you never need to use it, then so what? It’s not as if it is physically hurting your child to have a tracking device on a wrist watch or in a cell phone. The downsides are limited. One of them is that you don’t want to become obsessed with these devices to the point that it is emotionally damaging to your child. If you tell your child that he or she must wear a tracking device at all times because you are sure that if not, someone will come and kidnap them then your child is going to become a paranoid and fearful person. You don’t want to scare your child or make your child feel that he or she is unsafe and has to be very guarded against the outside world. Instead, try telling your child in a very gentle way – this device is “just in case” – just like a seat belt is worn “just in case” there is an auto accident. The other downfall is that these devices can be expensive, and most of them have a base cost for the equipment plus a monthly service and monitoring fee. If you cannot afford one of these products right now, you needn’t beat yourself up about it – for one, the prices will go down as the popularity of the products goes up; plus, people have been parenting for thousands of years without safety tracking devices in existence, so you can too.

There has been much talk in the media about implanting tracking devices into babies at birth. This is a much more controversial issue than simply having your child armed with a separate device. Many people use internal devices in their dogs and cats so that if their pet runs away, they will be able to track its location and get it back. Animals are entirely different than people, though, so if you have the opportunity to have a safety tracking device implanted in your child, you have to consider the personal privacy of your child (who, obviously, will be an adult someday) and your ethical stance on the issue. How would you feel if your location could be monitored at any time? It’s a strange concept that almost invokes thoughts of science fiction thrillers. In my opinion, it is not a decision that you should make for your child, but a separate device, such as a tracking wrist watch, is a completely ethical option for concerned parents.
