Some people spend enormous amounts of time trying to find good movies for their kids to watch. Let’s face it, there aren’t very many. The following is a helpful guide on how to make sure that what your child is watching is decent. It may still take time to find the right film for your kids, but it’s worth it. When you do, they’ll love you for it eventually if not right away. Take this important step in protecting your child.

Some things to consider include the film's direction, actors, and plot. Many role models for kids are actors who often make bad decisions in their public lives. If your child watches movies where mistakes are made, he or she is liable to make the same error, thinking their actions are cool. Protection is the number one priority for parents.

First, check the movie out beforehand. There isn’t anything much more disappointing from an entertainment standpoint than renting a film only to find out that it isn’t appropriate for your child to see, due to language, violence, or romantic encounters. Check the storyline and look at the rating. These can usually be found on the back of the box at the video store. Also, you can look on the Website, which typically is listed on the back of the box. Be sure that you are getting a good movie that your child will enjoy with age-appropriate content. However, don’t give in to your child’s demands; you must show your authority and make responsible viewing decisions. If your kid is mad that you won’t let him watch that “popular” movie that has bad reviews, then it is his problem, not the parent's. Just remember that he will thank you later for what you are doing to protect him now.

Second, if you do rent or buy a movie, check out the previews. Often you can tell what type of movie it is by the type of previews for other films it shows beforehand. If violent shows are advertised, then usually the movie will also be violent. Some films at first appear innocent, but end up containing inappropriate elements for kids. Never assume that a "PG" or "PG13" rating means that the movie is safe for your child. Parents should take precautions to make sure of your child’s safety. One way to do this is by viewing the movie with your children and discussing it with them afterward.

Last of all, keep your options open. Watch the accompanying commercials. Many times great children’s shows will sponsor commercials for certain products. These are helpful when determining when a movie or TV show is child-safe. Many important clues will be given during the commercial. If questionable products like alcohol or cigarettes are endorsed, this may not be the show your child should be viewing.

There aren’t many steps to securing your child’s interests in a family-friendly film. Make sure that you don't give your children a blanket endorsement to watch any film that is not R-rated. A child’s mind is precious. What a shame it would be if nothing was done to protect it. Following the above tips may make for a better viewing experience and family time.
