Homeschooling allows single moms (as well as all parents regardless of marital status), to provide a quality education, tailored to their child’s unique needs, talents and interests. It provides a way for the single mom to learn along side her children and enables her to enjoy more quality time with her children than if they attended school all day. In households run by one parent due to divorce or the death of a spouse, this increased family time can help comfort children through these very stressful situations. Homeschooling allows the single mom the opportunity to instill a love of learning in her children by using creative teaching techniques.
Many people view homeschooling as a valid educational option for the typical American family, with dad as the breadwinner and mom as a stay at home parent. However, as homeschooling becomes increasingly popular, homeschool families become increasingly more diverse. Single moms considering homeschooling may believe their marital status automatically excludes them from homeschooling but, fortunately, this is a false perception. By developing a solid support system, staying dedicated, and maintaining flexibility, single moms can give their children the awesome benefit of a home education.
One of the biggest obstacles a single mom may face when deciding to homeschool is finding a way to work to support the family, while simultaneously staying home to homeschool. Making ends meet as a single mom, whether homeschooling or not, is a difficult yet not impossible task. Many single homeschooling moms find ways to make it work by starting a home-based business. Starting a home-based business allows the single mom the flexibility of choosing her own schedule, as well as deciding when and where to work. Other single homeschooling moms choose to work from home. There are many jobs single moms can perform from home including customer service for various businesses, data entry, coding, and web design. Some single homeschooling moms choose to work part time outside the home. Homeschooling allows for a great deal of flexibility in choosing part time work schedules because teaching time can be scheduled for whatever time works best for the family. Still other single moms work full time and homeschool during the evenings and weekends. Homeschooling moms in this situation often have the help of family members and friends to care for their children during the day and even help supervise some educational activities. The type of one on one education homeschooling provides can often be accomplished in less time than is needed in a traditional school setting, where children must wait their turn for help and teachers cannot give undivided attention.
Finding support is absolutely essential for single homeschooling moms. Supportive friends and family are instrumental in helping single moms meet and conquer the emotional, financial, and schedule related challenges they face. Homeschool groups also provide an excellent way for moms, as well as home-educated children, to meet other homeschoolers, make friends, and participate in field trips and other group activities.
Homeschooling as a single mom does take commitment and planning but through flexibility and creativity, it can be wonderfully successful.
