PERFECT PACKING
If you want to have an organized dorm room, then you have to perfect the art of packing. An organized packing job makes it one hundred percent easier to organize your room. When you get to college, you aren’t going to feel like spending days sorting through all the junk that you stuffed into some boxes and suitcases the night before you left home. You will be eager to explore the campus and get to know some new potential friends. You will want to bond with your roommate and explore the new town that you will be living and learning in. Therefore, you should start packing early, so that you do not have to rush through it and make a confusing and jumbled mess of things. You should do as much packing in advance as possible – pack the things that you will not need to use until you get to college. You should pack bathroom supplies into a shower caddy and then wrap the caddy in plastic wrap so that the contents won’t spill. When you get to college, just remove the plastic from the caddy, and you will already have your bathroom supplies organized and ready for use. If you are going to be storing clothes in stackable milk crates, you should pre-pack the crates, and wrap them in plastic wrap, just like the bathroom caddy. Basically, anything that can be done early should be. Pack all of your school supplies together; pack any pictures or decorations together. Label you boxes so that you can unpack in a sequential manner.
When you get to school, you will be able to get settled quickly, leaving your schedule open for college fun.
KEEP IT CLEAN
Close your eyes and picture your vision of an organized dorm room. I bet you didn’t see dirty clothes strewn about the floor and fast food wrappers cluttering the desk tops. If you live like a slob, you will not stand a chance at organization. In fact, a messy room will make you feel unorganized and claustrophobic. Dorm rooms are generally quite small, so your goal has to be to keep whatever limited amount of open floor space you have clean. Sloppiness is childish, and going away to college should be your first big step towards adulthood. You are going to be busy once classes start, so in order to keep up with cleaning and organization, you should reserve a few hours each weekend to tidy up your dorm room, get some laundry done, organize your desk, and take out the trash. If you keep up with your weekly cleanings, then you will be a much more organized student.
SCHEDULE ORGANIZATION
As a college freshman, you are going to be taking on a much larger schoolwork load than you were used to in high school. Also, your college professors are going to expect you to be accountable for getting assignments and projects completed on a deadline. You also may decide to join some clubs or organizations, or you might get a part-time job, and you will have to juggle all of your obligations. First of all, you are going to need an alarm clock so that you don’t sleep through your early classes. You should also get a date book or a palm pilot so that you can write down all of your responsibilities in one place. Also, you should get a dry erase board to hang in your room so that you can quickly jot down reminders for yourself. Dry erase calendars are another item that can aid in your organization. You should make checklists for yourself on a nightly basis to use for the following day. When you make a checklist, you can easily see when you have completed all of the tasks you were responsible for.
