Playing sports is a wonderful opportunity for children for a variety of reasons. Competitive sports teach kids numerous lessons that they can apply throughout their lives. And of course, engaging in sports has quite a health advantage as well. Not all kids, however, will like competing in athletics. It is very important to realize that you must never push children to participate in something they do not enjoy. If your kids do show an interest in sports when they are young, always encourage them first and foremost. Once they are involved, there are plenty of ways to help your kids enjoy the sports they play.
The physical benefits of sports do not need much explanation. Sports activity automatically equates to exercise. Hence, moving their bodies plays a major role in the overall health of children. Not only does playing sports help kids maintain a healthy weight, but sports have also proven to improve motor skills and boost physical maturation, especially among physically and mentally disabled children. An active involvement in athletics also aids in the social and mental growth of kids. By participating in sports, boys and girls learn how to cooperate with others and learn to work as a team. Sports have proven to enhance self-esteem and self-image as well. Athletics help promote a healthy lifestyle and a dedication to physical exercise throughout a child’s life.
Obviously, the advantages of sports participation are numerous for kids. But parents should be mindful of ways to help their sons and daughters enjoy athletics and not loathe them. First, do not get your kids involved with organized sports until they are at least six or seven years old. Anything earlier may not be a good idea for a lot of children. Kids barely out of toddlerhood have extremely short attention spans. Trying to get them to concentrate on a ball game or sporting match usually proves to be virtually impossible. Children this young more than likely will not quite have the mental capacity to wean much from the experience. By six or seven, kids are more organized, can retain more, and the chances of burnout decrease dramatically.
If your children show an interest in sports, then by all means promote their becoming involved. Always, always, always encourage your kids before and after their games or matches. Be sure and verbalize what a good job they did, and remind them constantly how proud you are of them, no matter whether they are the star player or see very little playing time. There is no bigger confidence boost for your kids than praise from their parents. Try to be as agreeable as possible with other parents and coaches. If you complain or yell all the time, your kids will want to avoid you. You will be a cause of embarrassment for them and you can bet they will lose interest in sports very quickly. Instead, cheer excitedly and always voice supportive thoughts. When at home, watch sports on television with your kids and explain to them how watching professionals can help improve their play. This can be a great bonding experience and your kids will learn something as well.
Always let your kids decide for themselves if they want to participate in sports. Do not force playing upon them. Many a child garners resentment and anger towards parents who push him or her to do something he or she does not enjoy. Not all kids like sports and not all kids have athletic abilities. If your child is not interested in playing sports, then make it perfectly clear he or she does not have to. There are plenty of other wonderful activities, like music or the arts, in which your kids can participate. Do not ever attempt to live your life through your children. Just because you may love sports does not mean that they will. If they express an interest in not playing, be supportive. If you aren’t, you run the risk of making your son or daughter feel like he or she is a disappointment. Long-term emotional damage is sure to be done.
The advantages of playing sports are plentiful for your kids. Children learn valuable life lessons from athletics, such as learning to cooperate with others, how to work hard, and what it is like to both win and lose. All of these will help your children adapt to different situations they will encounter as they get older. Participating in sports should also instill a love of physical activity in your kids that will help them stay healthy throughout their lives. If your kids don’t have an interest in playing, don’t force them to do so. Encourage them to find another activity that will help them develop socially. There are plenty from which to choose. If your children do enjoy playing sports, and if you want them to continue to play for a long time, remember to always encourage them, don’t try and live through them, and actively participate in sporting events with them.
