Electronics have become a large part of everyone's lives, including children. Not only are there television and all its options of cable and satellite but movies, computers, and video games. Handheld electronics are some of the fastest growing segments; even cell phones have a large impact on children with their games. Computers are not only for video games but allow Internet access. These options all have great choices for education as well as entertainment.

Pay attention to what your kids are wanting. Try to see if they want the device for their own reasons or if they simply saw it somewhere or a friend has one. If it is something they really want, it will get more use. Sometimes there is not anything wrong with getting your kid some electronic gadget because all his friends have one.

One of the main suggestions for buying electronics for kids is to know what ages are suggested for the device or game. Age appropriateness makes a difference in keeping kids entertained. If a game or device is too advanced for them, they will not play and it will probably collect dust on the shelf. The reverse is also true for games that are too easy for the child.

When choosing a handheld device for gaming, research the various games available for the system. When a new device is launched, there are not usually a lot of games available and the suggested age or ratings may be for older kids. An older game system with a large number of available games may be the better choice. It will be a more affordable choice too.

If the electronic device is for a younger child, pay attention to how well it is made. Companies make electronics for kids that are made of heavy-duty plastic and can handle being dropped and such. Quality matters for all electronics though.

Check out Internet sites that review large numbers of competing products. Be sure the read the customer reviews and opinions. If a parent makes an effect to leave their opinion it is probably worth reading. If you still are not sure, take a trip to a brick and mortar store and see them for yourself.

What kinds of accessories may need to be purchased? Extra batteries, power cords, pointing devices, headphones or other accessories might be required. The older the child, the better they can understand the options and how to use them. Younger kids might do better with handheld electronics that do not have separate game cartridges and controller. In addition, for car trips, check into portable DVD players. There are rental and leasing companies that you can get the devices from without having to purchase them.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) worried about the cumulative effect of the various electronics and how it would affect growing children. They have a campaign called Media Matters that addresses their concerns. They have suggestions for parents about time limits and being involved with what their children watch and being available to answer questions.
