Scooters are becoming more and more popular. First it was the skateboard, then roller skates and now the scooter. Scooters have been around for a long time, but their popularity tends to come and go in cycles from generation to generation. Whomever it was that decided to put some handlebars on a skateboard and call it a scooter definitely knew what they were doing. Kids from all generations have experienced the excitement of riding this little ride-on called a scooter. As technology developed they motorized the scooter, making it more desirable and in demand.

Just like any outdoor toy or vehicle the scooter can be a dangerous piece of equipment if used wrong. There have been millions of injuries and accidents reported from improper use of scooters. Don’t let your child become one of those statistics. There are some safety precautions you should take with your child before you allow them to operate their scooter. Here are some safety tips to follow:

1. First and foremost always wear a helmet. Your child should not get on any outdoor riding toy without a helmet. Head injuries are one of the worst childhood injuries. They could leave the kid scared for life.

2. Other safety gear is also recommended - like elbow and knee pads.

3. Make sure the scooter fits the size of the child. You don’t want a young child trying to operate a scooter that is too big and heavy for him/her to handle. For smaller children (preschoolers) you might want to consider the scooters that have the two wheels on the back to help with balance.

4. If the child is inexperienced, have someone supervise while they are riding their scooter.

5. Wear sturdy shoes when riding the scooter. Sandals and flip-flops can hinder your performance and you could easily injury your toes and feet.

6. Ride the scooter in safe areas away from cars and pedestrians. Hills and un-level ground could also be dangerous for kids to tackle. You should avoid water, sand and sidewalk bumps. Even a small bump in the sidewalk can abruptly stop the front wheel.

7. Review safety concerns with you child and explain why they must follow the rules. If they know the hazards and are aware of what could happen they will be more likely to follow the safety rules.

8. Also make sure your scooter is assembled correctly. Read the instructions when putting it together and be careful to tighten all bolts, nuts and screws. If the scooter is not properly assembled and doesn’t work well it could be a dangerous object for your child.

Motorized scooters pose a bigger threat when it comes to risk and injury. Most manufacturers recommend that older children (8 years +) and adults should operate this type of scooter. The same safety tips should be followed when operating a motorized scooter. An additional precaution for this scooter is to stay out of traffic and do not ride them at night; because of their size they are hard for drivers to see in the dark.

Scooters are meant to be entertaining and enjoyable. If you and your child follow the safety tips listed above you will be well on your way to having a pleasant experience with this outdoor vehicle. Be sure to make your scooter experience a positive one.
