Wedding guests can attest to the fact that while the vows couples read to each other will cause a lump in their throat, even the most hardened guest will get a tear in his eye when he sees the bride and her father take to the floor for that last one dance. Songs galore have been written for this one occasion, but often overlooked is the new wedding tradition: the mother/son dance. One cannot argue the bond that a mother and son have with each other, so here are a few modern and classic mother/son songs to play at your own wedding.

“A Song for my Son on his Wedding Day,” by Mikki Vierek is, unarguably, one of the best picks for this dance. The mother in this song remembers her son when he was a young boy and gives him words of advice on his wedding day telling him to “be kind, be sweet, be a gentleman” followed up with “you will always be my son.”

What wedding would be complete without a John Lennon ballad? “Beautiful Boy” may be the perfect song as a father tells his son to take heed of life’s dangers and to never worry because he will always be around to take care of him. He sings, “Before you cross the street, take my hand. Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy.”

If you love country ballads, choose Faith Hill’s “There You’ll Be.” In this song she is thanking the one she loves for giving her the strength she needed when she was weak. She sings, “In my dreams, I’ll always see you soar above the sky. In my heart there will always be a place for you, for all my life.”

The Boys II Men single, “A Song for Mama” is just that, a tribute to all hardworking moms from their adoring sons. There will not be a dry eye in the house when they sing, “And then you came to me and say to me I can face anything...you will always be the girl in my life.”

Josh Groban’s uplifting song, “You Raise Me Up” is a terrific song for all those sons who want to thank their mothers for believing in them when nobody else did. In this song, the lyrics “I am strong when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up to more than I can be” will be a loving tribute to Mom on this special day.

The Beatles’ song “In My Life” would be another great nostalgic pick for the mother/son dance. In this beautiful song are the following sentiments: “But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you...In my life, I love you more.”

Of course, when picking the song for the mother/son dance, make sure to pick a song that reflects the relationship of the mother and son. Some mothers and sons may want to throw caution to the wind and instead of choosing a sentimental song, pick a song that reflects their fun-loving personalities. Either way, this will be their one special moment on this hectic day!
