Feng Shui symbols are one of the ways in which energy and intention is balanced in an area. Through the use of symbols, one can find ways to add flow to specific areas as well as change the way in which specific events are occurring in their life. By understanding what these symbols are and how they help with the energies that come from Feng Shui, one will be able to find the appropriate symbols for various areas.
According to Theresa Hart, a full time Feng Shui specialist, "Feng Shui symbols can be anything, because you can add your intention to anything." In ancient Chinese practices, there are specific symbols that will represent different areas of Feng Shui practice; however, these are not necessarily the symbols that must be used.
Feng Shui symbols can be said to be a part of an area that allow you to react and create a different energy flow. "Feng Shui wants you to be comfortable; your nervous system should be comfortable. [For example] mother's who have new babies do Feng Shui naturally because they want their babies to be safe. So they put rubber around sharp corners. That is Feng Shui," says Hart. This concept states that anything can be Feng Shui, as long as it relates to your comfort and intentions.
Another way in which Feng Shui symbols can naturally be used is through the culture that one relates the object to. Hart states that "every culture has a Feng Shui. The American-Indians have a Feng Shui. The Italians have a Feng Shui, when they have their back to the door and they look to see who is coming." The intention of Feng Shui symbols belonging to a culture shows that the symbols, while important, are related to a persons intention as well as what allows their mind to move into comfort and balance.
Symbols in Feng Shui can be anything that makes you feel a certain way. From this feeling, specific energies will shift. As the energy changes through the symbols, thoughts will be triggered. These triggers sharpen the intentions and allow certain things to happen in that space. Because of this, Feng Shui symbols are defined by individual energies, triggers and ideas of what will cause certain areas to be heightened and successful.
Feng Shui symbols are related to anything and done naturally according to one's intentions and instincts that are part of what they consider to be balanced energies. In order to emphasize this point, Hart related this story about the use of symbols:
"I went into a Chinese shop in Portland, Oregon, which had just built a beautiful Chinese garden. It was incredible. It was all built on Feng Shui principles. I asked the owner for a few things and he said, 'Oh, do you do Feng Shui?' and I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Oh, could I have your card? We would you like to do it here.' I said, 'But you already do it here.' He had statues all turned to face the people. He had the wind chimes above the door. I pointed that out and he said, 'Oh! Is that Feng Shui? My mother just did that.' I said, 'Yes, it must come instinctively to her.'"
