Wind chimes are one of the basic tools used in feng shui. Most often used to encourage prosperity and good luck, wind chimes can be useful in every area of the home to help move stagnant energy.

Linda Binns, founder and executive director of the Feng Shui Success Institute and owner of Harmony Inside, often recommends wind chimes to her clients. Linda tells us, "Wind chimes are used a lot in Feng Shui for two reasons. One is because they have movements associated with them. They also represent energy and direction. We use wind chimes sometimes when we want to change the energy somewhere. If we need to awaken the energy, if we need to bring more energy into a space, or get energy moving; then, we might suggest a wind chime."

Wind chimes can be made of all kinds of materials, come in all sizes with different numbers of rods, and have a wide variety of tones. You can even make your own. Different types of chimes are often recommended for different applications. "You can use wind chimes anywhere inside or outside of the house," Linda explains, "For example, we will often suggest a wind chime by your front door, outside the front of the house. For this location we will usually recommended a metal wind chime that has a very clear sound to it. I recommend listening to the wind chimes before you buy them. You can get some really nice tuned ones now. Having a metal wind chime sounds really nice next to your front door and holds good energy.

Some practitioners and feng shui books are very specific about which wind chimes you should use. Dig deep enough and you will find information that details not only the materials and size that the chime should be for each application, but the number of rods that the chime should have. Trying to figure out exactly which chime to use can be confusing and intimidating. Luckily the important thing is to choose a wind chime that feels and sounds right to you. Linda says, "There is no specific design that a wind chime has to be. It is really anything that you like, which is why we use them." Remember in feng shui, most choices are intuitive. The end result should be pleasing and comfortable. Never use a wind chime that you dislike.

For those who wish to be more specific there are some general guidelines for the most effective materials:

Metal: Creativity & Children, Helpful People & Travel
Clay: Skills & Knowledge
Glass: Career & Life Path
Wood or Bamboo: Family, Prosperity & Abundance

Wind chimes are a great remedy for any area where energy becomes stagnant, such as corners and other areas that are blocked from the flow of energy. A wind chime does not have to blow around or make noise to do its job. In fact, the still, remote areas of the house can often benefit most from a well placed chime.
