How to Fill Epson Ink Cartridges

By Ty Arthur

  • Overview

When your printer notifies you that it is almost out of ink your first reaction may be to go buy a whole new set of cartridges, which can be quite expensive. Many people don't realize that Epson ink cartridges can instead be refilled with ink purchased through a third party company and still work just as well as an entirely new cartridge. Although the process can be a little messy, the reduced cost is well worth the time and effort.
How to Fill Epson Ink Cartridges
    • Step 1

Open the case on your Epson printer and remove the ink cartridges. Set down a few paper towels on a flat work space and then set the ink cartridges on them.
    • Step 2

Flip the ink cartridge over so that the bottom is facing up towards you. Pull back the sticker if there is one covering the rubber plug. Use a knife or flat head screwdriver to pop out the rubber plug that covers the ink hole.

    • Step 3

Take the syringe that came with the refill kit and fill it with the appropriate color for the cartridge you are refilling. Put 10 milliliters of ink in the syringe if you are refilling the black cartridge or five milliliters of ink if you are filling any of the color cartridges.
    • Step 4

Place the needle of the syringe into the open ink hole and inject the ink inside. Stop injecting immediately if any ink starts to drip out of the top.
    • Step 5

Pop the plugs back into place if they didn't break when you remove them or instead cover the holes with regular tape. Wipe off any ink on the bottom or sides of the cartridge and then place it back in the printer.
    • Step 6

Repeat the process for the other cartridges, making sure to put the correct color in the correct cartridge.
    • Skill: Moderate
    • Ingredients:
    • Epson ink refill kit
    • Paper towels
    • Knife
    • Tip: Printer ink makes stains that are very hard to get out so you may want to wear gloves and an old t-shirt in case you accidentally spill the container or squirt ink out of the syringe.
    • Warning:
    • Fill the cartridge very slowly because if you inject the ink too quickly it will cause air bubbles to form which will affect the performance of your printer.
