How Fill HP Deskjet Printer Ink Cartridges

By Catherine Johnson

  • Overview

Replacing your empty ink cartridges is part of maintaining your HP Deskjet printer. Over time, purchasing expensive new cartridges is an inconvenient hassle that can end up costing more than the printer itself. Refilling your HP Deskjet ink cartridges is a more cost-effective solution that allows you to conveniently refill low ink levels on demand. Reusing your plastic cartridges is also an effective way of reducing environmental waste. Here is how you can refill your HP Deskjet printer ink cartridges in just a few steps.
Refill the ink in your HP Deskjet printer cartridges.
    • Step 1

Turn your HP Deskjet printer on. Lift up the front cover and lower the paper tray. The cartridge holder should be in the center of the printer. Snap the cartridge you need to refill out of its holder and remove it from the printer.
    • Step 2

Remove any clogged ink by carefully wiping the print head on the bottom of the cartridge in a vertical direction with the paper towels.

    • Step 3

Cover the print head by applying a small amount of tape over it. Make sure the tape creates an airtight seal.
    • Step 4

Check to see the maximum amount of ink your cartridge will hold. Remove the HP sticker label from the cartridge top. There is a small hole underneath.
    • Step 5

Fill the syringe with ink, making sure to not go past your cartridge's maximum capacity limit. Insert the syringe needle into the hole and slowly inject the ink.
    • Step 6

Remove the syringe and securely reapply the sticker label over the hole.
    • Step 7

Remove the tape on the print head and wipe it again in a vertical manner.
    • Step 8

Insert the refilled cartridge into its holder inside of the printer. Push the top until the cartridge snaps into place. Close the HP Deskjet printer cover and paper tray.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Bulk printer ink (check what type is needed for your cartridge)
    • Tape
    • Syringe
    • Paper towels
    • Tip: The print head is a very delicate area. Gently wipe all of the excess ink off. If the area is not thoroughly cleaned, the nozzle could become blocked.
    • Tip: Clean up any ink spills with warm water and soap.
