How to Fill Ink on an Epson 82 Cartridge

By Chris Moore

  • Overview

The Epson 82 brand ink cartridge is slightly different than the original cartridges. It is split into two parts, including both a reservoir to store the ink and a sponge above the print head. This makes an 82's refill procedure slightly different than Epson's other similar cartridges, but the same kit and tools will still work. Once you refill the ink, there is still the matter of the cartridge chip that tips off the printer that the ink is out. The chip (and cartridge with it) won't work once it's been tripped.
    • Step 1

Get a refill kit designed especially for refilling Epson original ink cartridges. This kit should have extra tools designed to help refill this particular cartridge.
    • Step 2

Fill the syringe bottle with 12 milliliters of the color ink your cartridge holds. If the syringe from your kit doesn't include one, get a 1 1/2 inch long plastic needle that will connect to the syringe through a twist lock.

    • Step 3

Open the reservoir part of the cartridge (the empty chamber without a sponge) by removing the plug and insert the needle into the hole. Inject the ink until the reservoir is full.
    • Step 4

Remove any air trapped in the cartridge by inserting the needle into the print head's exit port and drawing out one milliliter of ink. While the syringe may work, it's better to transfer the needle to a bottom fill adapter bottle that should be included in the kit. Insert the needle into the exit port seal and draw another milliliter out from the reservoir to prime the cartridge.
    • Step 5

Plug the reservoir back up. Use a different plug if the old one is damaged, because the seal must be airtight. Make sure the vent hole above the sponge is open (a new unfilled cartridge may have it covered in foil that must be removed).
    • Step 6

Let the cartridge stand for at least an hour so the sponge can absorb the ink. Keep it standing in its installation position so air bubbles can rise to the top.
    • Step 7

Replace or reset the chip if it was tripped from an empty cartridge. The same vendor that supplied the refill kit may have replacement chips or resetting devices as well. Each color cartridge has its own chip, so make sure you get the right one.
