If you are hunting to find a church for your family that will meet then needs of everyone you must decide what you are looking for in a pastor and congregation.
Finding a church home can be debilitating on a family. It is a job that needs to be well thought out and everyone has to be considered including the children. There are so many different areas to look into such as the pastor and his religious background, denomination, children's programs, music ministries, sunday school and cell groups and even the overall reportoire of the congregation.
First one must ask themselves what denomination do they consider their family to be. It may be that the husband comes from one background and the wife another. This is where some compromise must come into play. Give both parties an equal chance to share their denominaton and beliefs. If a compromise is not met between either denominations it may be best to start over and venture out beyond just the original choices. It is not easy to find the right denomination if there are two different ideas so this must be worked out first.
Once the denomination of church you will be attending is established then you can seek out the local churches and surrounding areas. You may want to visit all of them and decide, however you may be fortunate enough to see right away the place you want to be. A good idea to find out more about the pastor is to ask about his previous experience, where has he pastored previously? Where did he attend school? Questions such as these will help you feel more secure about whom you are learning from.
If you and your family are wanting to not only attend the church but also be directly involved within the ministry see what openings the church has on a volunteer basis such as sunday school teachers, nursery workers and music or praise and worship team. Take time to visit with the individuals who are involved and see what they have to say.
If you have children that will be attending services it is very important to see that there is a good program offered for them as well. Find out if there are activities that meet the needs of their specific age group. If your child is not happy with the programs offered and the classes being taught, chances are they need to find a place that they can feel involved. You can usually tell how well the childrens classes or youth program is going by the enthusiam or lack of by the participants.
There are several things to consider while searching for a church home but most importantly is that you feel welcomed by the congregation. Figure out your needs as far as what age group of people you need to be involved with. Does the church family consist mainly of older or younger families? Are they friendly and seem to want you to be a part of the congregation? You should be able to consider these people as your second family and feel comfortable in asking for help in time of need as well as feeling comfortable enough to offer help to others. It is also good to find out if there are social events organized within the church to get acquainted with everyone. Fellowship plays a big role in the happiness of your church home.
There are many different denominations with many different beliefs. It is not uncommon to go to several churches and not find the right one for your family. The key is not to give up, do not expect your church of choice to be perfect either. Many times we think everything needs to be exactly as we think and do and the truth of the matter is that no where you go will you find everything to your exact specifications. If you remember that and keep an open mind you will make the job much easier. If you can find a church where you agree with what the pastor is preaching and can get you and your children involved and find that you love the people in the church as your family then you are on the right track.
