Use the fire screens. Most homes have fire screens around their fire places, rather than back in the days when they used to just be an open place. You want to use a fire screen or something that is going to contain, especially if you are using fuel, such as wood. Sometimes some wood can pop and cause embers to fly out, so you want to make sure to catch all of those embers before they pop out of the fireplace and ignite something. So you want to make sure you have a fire screen or something placed in front of that fireplace. You don't want to sit too close to a fireplace. You want to give that area a good amount of space; just like your space heater. It can ignite things that are too close to it.
