It's also known as a Swiss ball. I've been using it for about 10 years now and it got the term Swiss ball from Swedish physical therapist. They were the ones that really first start using it in the rehabilitation setting, it came over to the United States, so I don't recall probably around 20 years or so ago and from there their the athletic circle started doing things with it as well. And it's just a big round ball that people will do exercise on. What's cool about it is that its creates an unstable environment and by doing that when people do lift or stretches or stability work or co-work on a fit ball not only do the muscle that do the lift have to work but also the stabilizer muscles do too. Here is an example let say somebody want to do a dumbbell press on a bench press or on a bench the muscles that are involved with the chest and the triceps are the primary these are other ones that are creating the action to take place. So they are getting stronger. But if somebody where to do the same motion lying down on a fit ball then not only do they have to engage a prime mover but the muscles around the shoulder joint and the rotator cuff muscle have to stabilize because the person is doing it on the ball that can roll back and forth. So they have to work harder and then the lower back musculature and the gluts and hamstrings also have to work hard to hold the person steady on the ball too. So they are working in a functional sense in a stabilizing sense and its kind of teaching the whole body to work as a unit. You can't get that on the bench press.

So that's the cool thing about the fit ball. I like to use that because I still think doing things on a bench are important. It's wise to isolate muscles from time to time and really just focus on the strength. But to get them to work in a functional set with the rest of the body then do some fit ball work too.

I think they are of optimal for help.
