Ironically, women should train the same way as men do if they want to see the goals they want to see. For example, every woman that comes into my studio wants to lose body fat. They want to reshape the body and they want to see more tone in their physique and that's their primary goal. Men on the other hand they want to lose body fat and they want to put on more muscle mass. Now what's ironic is that increasing tone and definition and putting on more muscle mass is actually the same process. Tone and definition and muscle mass are the same thing. So if women want see more tone, shape, muscle mass or tone and shape and loss of body fat, my recommendation is to do strength training program and to make that a priority. By doing so they are going to put on some muscle and muscle weight is the body's baseline for metabolic rate. Research shows that to be between 30-60 calories a day. So in other words, when somebody puts on little bit of muscle they are also going be able to burn more calories on a daily basis without anymore exercise. So the person could lose body fat by gaining muscle at the same time. This is a given if they eat the same amount of calories that they were before. Not often do we want to cut the calories back. Cardio is a good supplement. It's a good complement but it should not be the primary form of exercise.

It should support the strength training program. In other words strength training should be first and then the overall exercise program, cardiovascular to support that. If somebody starts getting close to being over trained or starting to feel overwhelmed the first thing they should cut back is the cardio and keep the strength training. And this is for both men and women.
