Fly-fishing is obviously a form of fishing that is done with a fly rod rather than a thinning rod. You use a different kind of reel. The action of your arm, shoulder, and your wrist is far different than fishing with a spinning rod and reel. Also, the flies you use are a different kind of a bait than you would use on a spinning rod. You are trying to get it as far out in a stream or a lake, as pinpointed in terms of where you are aiming for. It's a very precise skill, and a lot of the success in fly-fishing is dependent upon your skill at casting the fly.

Q. The fly is attached to hook already?

The fly is a hook. There is the fly, the line, the regular fishing line, and then there is a leader which is usually lighter weight than the line. Then, there is a fly at the end of it, and the fly is built around a hook. In another words, the material that is used in tying the fly is built on a hook, so that it's all one piece. The lures are often much bigger than a fly and the hook is usually suspended from the lure.

Q. Are real flies used in flyfishing?

No, they are artificial. They are made with real material, and they are made to look or represent various insects or water bugs that would be hatching in a stream that the trout or bass you are fishing for would be attracted to eat. So, a lot of people call it matching the hatch where you will have a fly that looks like blue damsel or a stonefly, all of which are naturally occurring insects along streams. The secret in tying a fly or buying an already tied fly is to get them to look exactly like the bugs that are in the area you are fishing. A lot of the flies that you will use will look exactly like any bug, that has landed on the water.
