There are 5 major ways to preserve food. They are,dry canning, wet canning, dehydrating, smoking and freezing. This article will go over all methods so you can see which would be best for you.

Dry Canning. You can preserve raisins, coconut, grains, beans, any kind of dried fruit or vegetable, pasta, rice or legumes. Anything dry will be good for this method of canning.

You need to have access to a canner machine. Some canned food factories will allow you to use their canning machine. You can purchase the cans and the seals that you put on top.

The Wet Canning Method or Bottling Method. This has been a popular food preservation method for 100's of years. This method retains the flavor of the fruit, vegetable or meat that is canned. The drawback of this method is that the food loses many nutrients in the process. You need to use a pressure cooker to can them. Be very careful during the boiling process because botulism, a deadly poison, is common if not canned properly to the required temperature and time limit to create the correct pressure in the jar.

Dehydrating or Drying Food. Drying is excellent for most fruits and vegetables. When you dry a food you take out the water or moisture from it and this prevents spoilage. The pluses of this procedure is that the dryed product weighs very little and the size is reduced considerably for easy storage. Also a plus, is that the food retains almost all of its nutrients. There are several ways to dry food. Sun drying, oven drying and drying in a dehydrator. The first two methods are difficult. Sun drying can be done with window screens that are washed thoroughly. Put them up on blocks and sandwich the washed and sliced fruit between them. Flip over and dry the other side after a few hours in very hot sun. Oven drying is done in a shallow baking pan at a very low temperature for several hours. A dehydrator is the best, most effective and easiest way to dry food. Try apples, bananas, peaches and even grapes. Store in an air tight container.

Smoking. This method is great for meat. Smokers cost about $100.00. Meat that is smoked retains very much of the nutrients and the taste is delicious. Follow the manufacturers directions so that you can preserve the meat properly and avoid spoilage.

Freezing. Freezing is another method of food storage, provided you have an extra freezer. The drawback is if there are power failures you will need a generator to run the freezer or all the food will spoil.
