We now have something called my pyramid and you can go to the website mypyramid.com and you get a semi-customized pyramid plan. You have to plug in your height, weight, activity level and age and that will come up with the number servings of each food group you should have. I feel very strongly that people don't focus on vegetables enough. For example, when I do mine it comes up with 2.5 cups of vegetables and it includes starchy vegetables like potatoes in those 2.5 cups. That's much less than what I think is an optimal level and much less than when you start reading studies that show that increase in your intake of vegetables reduces your rate of certain disease. It's a much higher intake, closer to 4-6 cups.


If someone is a vegetarian, we try to encourage most people to eat around three servings of fish every week focusing on deep cold water fish like salmon, carp, cod, sardine and sea bass. This type of fish is rich in a very healthy type of fat called Omega 3. We could do a whole article on seafood and fish. The reason why I said three servings is because if you eat too much with the wrong types of fish then of course you can be at risk for mercury toxicity. Also there are PCBs and other contaminants. I actually have a whole set of guidelines about seafood that I give to my clients that discusses what are the best types of fish and what to look for when you purchase fish and how you should prepare them so that you get the benefit without having to worry so much about these risks.
