So, you are considering taking a gourmet-themed cruise? Great! Of course, this will be a once in a lifetime experience that is meant for people who are quite risky and spontaneous. Taking chances is usually a good thing; and this will probably be one of those times when this holds true.

Keep in mind that on a gourmet cruise, you will be trying a lot of different varieties of foods. If you are the type of person who doesn’t like different types of foods, doesn’t like trying new foods, or doesn’t like fancy foods or creative cooking (such as creams that you’ve never heard of, recipes with ingredients that are extremely rare, hard to find, odd, etc.) then this type of cruise might not be for you. First of all, a cruise with all gourmet food is going to be expensive, so you will definitely want to get your money’s worth, and not just throw away several thousand dollars. Secondly, there will most likely not be any other options when it comes to the menu besides very different types of foods that you most likely have not tried before. If this does not appeal to you, or if you think you are the picky type of eater who will probably not like a lot of the gourmet foods, you might want to consider a different type of trip.

However, if you are the type of person who loves trying new things, loves learning how to cook different types of ethnic foods, enjoys taking risks, gets bored easily, and has the money and time to spend on this type of cruise, you will most likely enjoy this very different type of adventure. You can also look forward to learning more about different cultures and the kinds of foods that they like, and frequent. Some ingredients may be a surprise to you, but it will also probably widen your horizons to a whole new world of tastebuds, as well as a whole new world of recipes and appreciation for other cultures and other peoples! You can also count on meeting many new people and friends, especially different kinds of people. Most likely, there will be people of many different ages, socio-economic ranges, and cultures on this type of cruise. Your eyes will be opened to different ways of living, eating, cooking, and traveling. You will probably even learn different kinds of ways to cook, and be introduced with different kinds of cooking equipment.

If you are a parent, you might want to think twice about bringing the kids. Most kids don’t like gourmet foods, and are quite picky about food choices. Again, there will probably not really be any bland food or kid-friendly food choices on a gourmet themed cruise. It will most likely be very fancy, with china and fancy silverware, and children just won’t be able to deal well with that type of thing. Also, children like having a lot of choices when it comes to food, and often want to eat the same staples every day. On a gourmet cruise, this will be next to impossible. It will probably make for an unpleasant dinner if your child demands grilled cheese, and there is only stuffed duck to eat for dinner. Not only will the child be hungry and cranky, but you will also not be able to enjoy your new experience with eating some new foods.

This type of cruise is probably perfect for a single to go on with friends, or a couple to go on together. Families (minus the children) would probably also enjoy this type of trip together. It probably wouldn’t be impossible to bring the kids, but probably would be preferable for adults-only. Some cruises (especially gourmet-themed) don’t allow children anyway. This would be one thing to ask the cruise line before you reserve your spot. Ask if children can come, or/and what kid-friendly activities/foods they offer. Even if you don’t have any children, you might want to ask this. A lot of people going on a gourmet-themed cruise might want to not have screaming children around for the amount of money they pay to go on this kind of cruise.
