A few weeks ago, my co-worker came up to me to ask how to make a margarita. He had tried several recipes and it seemed like nothing was coming out quite as he expected. Now, mind you, a margarita is probably my favorite drink, right up there next to a martini. Now, if you asked me how to make the perfect margarita, I would probably say, “Easy. Just walk up to the bartender and ask for a large frozen margarita with a salted rim.” How difficult can that be? However, since not everybody has access to a bartender from the confines of their home twenty-four hours a day, here are some recipes to make your own delicious homemade margaritas.

The Classic Margarita

It has been said that an authentic margarita has only three ingredients in it, but that it is the quality and freshness of these ingredients that make a good margarita great. In other words, don’t opt for the cheapest tequila you can find, and always go with fresh limes instead of lime juice. First you will need to prepare your margarita glass. Rub the rim with a wedge of lime to moisten it. Flip the glass upside down into a tray of kosher salt to properly “salt” the glass. In a cocktail shaker, add one and a half ounces of a good tequila, one ounce of fresh lemon or lime juice and half an ounce of triple sec with some ice. Shake well and pour over ice in your margarita glass.

Mango Margarita

My absolute favorite margarita is the mango margarita. The mix of the sweet fruit with the salty ingredients and rim make for a perfect combination. In a blender, add the juice of one-quarter of a lime as well as half a cup of fresh mango that has been peeled and sliced. Blend these two ingredients. Add one and a quarter of an ounce of tequila and half an ounce of cointreau. Blend this combination together with some ice and then pour into a margarita glass. Top the drink off with a splash of chambord and a wedge of mango or lime.

Strawberry Margarita

On the other hand, my husband’s second favorite margarita, after a classic one on the rocks, is the frozen strawberry margarita. To do this, first crush six cups of ice in a blender for twenty seconds. Add eight ounces of frozen strawberries, six ounces of tequila, two ounces of triple sec, and four ounces of a frozen limeade (from concentrate). Blend the mixture until it reaches a smooth consistency. This recipe will make four frozen strawberry margaritas, so it is great for a party.

Italian Margarita

If you want to try a different country’s spin on the margarita, why not try an Italian margarita? In a blender, put three cups of ice, three ounces of water, one ounce of triple sec, two ounces of amaretto (this is where the Italian flair comes in), three ounces of tequila, and six ounces of frozen lemonade (from concentrate). Blend this combination of ingredients until the mixture becomes the slushy consistency of a frozen margarita.
