Warm weather brings along with it plenty of sunshine and backyard barbecues! You can make your own barbecues more fun and safer for your family and guests if you follow these tips!

1. Preparation is a Key to Success

When you get your grill out to use it, position it so it's located at least twenty feet away from your house. It should also be located away from flammable objects or liquids, trees, bushes, vehicles, and

people.(This tip applies to both gas and charcoal grills alike.)

2. Keep the Fire in the Grill

Gas propane barbecue grills are popular with backyard grill masters because they are easy to use. Keep in mind that the gas inside the tanks is highly flammable! Don't smoke when you're setting up or operating a gas grill!

3. Clean the Grill Properly

You may think of cleaning the grilling surface as the only clean up you'll need to do. But, you'll also need to clean out the burners, tubes, and ports of your gas grill! Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions that came with your grill so you know how to properly clean the dirt and dust out of it.

After you clean the grill, inspect the burners and ports for signs of damage or wear. Inspect the tubes to make sure there are no holes or cracks in them. Also, don't forget to inspect the gas tank for leaks.

If you do detect a gas leak, shut off the propane valve immediately!

4. Light it Up Safely

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the proper procedure you should use. If you try to light a propane grill a couple times and it doesn't work, then take a break! Allow the built up gas fumes to

disperse into the air before you try again. And, don't inhale the harmful gas fumes either!

When you're using a charcoal grill, only use lighter fluid! Never use any other type of flammable liquid to light it with!

5. Transport and Store Propane Tanks Safely

Always transport and store spare gas tanks so they stay in an upright position at all times.

Store extra tanks away from heat, open flames, and your barbecue grill. Don't store them inside

your home.

6. Be Prepared for a Fire

If your gas grill does catch on fire, shut off the valves if you can reach them without getting burned.

Keep a fire extinguisher handy everytime you use your barbecue grill. If you can't put the fire out within a few seconds, then evacuate the area and call your local fire department.

For a charcoal grill, you can usually put the fire out by using water. If a fire in this type of grill does get out of hand, though, immediately contact the fire department!

7. Special Safety Tips for the Grillmaster

Using a barbecue grill safely requires special tools and accessories. Always use long handled spatulas, tongs, and forks when you're grilling. Don't wear loose fitting clothing that can dangle into the fire either. You should wear a heavy apron to protect your clothes from stains and grease spatters.

Finally, if you do get a minor burn, run cold water over it for several minutes to reduce the pain and swelling. Serious burns need immediate medical attention
