What is the history and tradition behind Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia?
This is not only the largest park in Savannah, Georgia, but it is the most active park in the city. Forsyth Park has great history and current success. It was created in 1851. It's amazing that such a large park would still exist and maintain its original size for so many years. It's 20-acres large, and while many other cities would have built businesses and residential areas on top of a park like this over a 150-year period, Savannah leaders made it a point to keep it in as close to its original form as possible.
Forsyth Park has long been the scene of many Civil War re-enactments by various groups, and is the home of several monuments and memorials to historical figures. In the center of Forsyth Park you'll see a monument constructed in memory of those killed in the Civil War. There is also a special garden in one corner of the park that is deemed the "Fragrant Garden for the Blind." A famous fountain is found in the other corner of the park. This fountain has appeared in several of the movies that have been filmed in Savannah, including "Forest Gump" and "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."
But Forsyth Park is not just for the history buffs. On any sunny weekend afternoon, the park is filled with pick-up football, softball and frisbee games. There are plenty of skateboard artists around some of the fountains, and walkers line the sidewalks. This is truly a great place to take your packed lunch and your family, lay a blanket out and enjoy a picnic in the park. There are always plenty of birds and other park animals enjoying the naturous attractions that call the park home. The park is always crowded. People of all ages, cultures and sizes come to this park to enjoy fun and sun.
Forsyth Park is along Bull Street in Savannah. It's the last park along this street and once marked the outskirts of the downtown Savannah area. Now, Forsyth Park is known as a park in the middle of downtown Savannah, and a park that is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
