Fort Hood is the largest military installation in the world. It's adjacent to Killeen, but most of the soldiers live in Killeen. It used to be completely open to the public, but following September 11, it's a closed base. You have to have access to get on base by going to their visitor's center to fill out paperwork. You'll be given a certain amount of time to stay and will have a visitor's sticker for your car. There are still areas that have restricted access as well. You actually have to be in the military to shop there. They have museums and chapels that you can visit. In fact, Elvis was stationed here for training. He had a house in Killeen that still exists. Fort Hood started as a training camp, so there are several little 1942 wooden buildings around. Following World War II, they made it a permanent base in 1950. Now you can see the old mixed with the new like high-powered tanks. It's just massive.
