In Feng Shui, fountains when used correctly are supposed to bring good luck. Feng Shui means wind and water. It is the Chinese art of placement, and of balancing and enhancing the environment. It has been practiced for 5,000 years to bring peace and balance into people's lives and encompasses a dimension of interior design that can add to any style.
"A fountain has the elements of water. So that element, when placed in a certain position, typically in the front part of your home, represents prosperity and increased flow in your life. It brings positive energy to you. The ones I make are out of quartz crystals. For example, one of them is out of rose quartz crystal, which is a pink stone. It has love properties in it. It's associated with relationships, love and a certain area of your home," Manfield and Janis say.
In Feng Shui, fountains have multiple purposes. People who practice Feng Shui use them for physical and mental health.
"It can be used as a cure for illnesses. A fountain can be used as a cure or to enhance or promote a missing part of your life. So for example, if your life is stuck, if your life path is stuck, if your career is stuck, those are the areas associated with the water elements. So if you put a fountain near your front door, or in the exterior of your home or building, it can promote good fortune. You see big fountains in the front of businesses, especially in Asian designed buildings or even in traditional aquariums in restaurants. It's about bringing flow and prosperity to that business," Manfield and Janis say.
Manfield and Janis say, proper use of fountains, lights, wind chimes and mirrors will symbolically open up the space. Fountains are microcosms of chi (energy) activating and money-producing water. They can also be protective; the strength of water disperses the "killing chi" of, say, an arrow-like road. Water fountains also create active, positive chi. In business they are used to encourage profits.
It is a good idea to activate the wealth sector of the office or home -- the southeast or east corner -- by introducing water into the area in the form of an aquarium with live fish to symbolize growth, or a small fountain to represent continuous turnover of wealth-producing water. The direction of the flow of water should not face the entrance of the room or the house as this will cause chi energy to depart. Placed in the southeast, a water fountain will favor communication, creativity and harmonious development. If situated in the east, the fountain is good for career-building, being active and realizing your dreams.
