How to Freeze Credit Reports

By Nicki Howell

  • Overview

With identify theft on the rise, many individuals freeze their credit to minimize additional damage. But to accomplish this task, you need to contact all three credit bureaus with a certified letter and supporting documentation. This allows your credit to be frozen, and can take a few weeks to accomplish.
    • Step 1

Contact TransUnion and request that your credit be frozen. This can be accomplished by sending a certified letter including your full name, address, driver's license copy and social security number. Mail the letter and supporting documentation to P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834.
    • Step 2

Contact Experian with a certified letter requesting your credit be frozen. Include your legal name, all addresses for the past two years, social security number, utility bill and a copy of your driver's license. Mail the packet of materials to Experian, P.O. Box 9554, Allen, Texas 75013.

    • Step 3

Contact Equifax requesting a credit freeze. Include your name, social security number and date of birth. You should also include a copy of a recent utility bill. Make sure to send a certified letter explaining the situation and attach a police report if you are the victim of identity theft. The letter can be sent to P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374.
    • Step 4

Make sure to include the appropriate fee with your requests. Currently, the three credit bureaus charge $10 per credit freeze. However, if you are the victim of identity theft, this fee is waved. Just make sure to send a police report to establish your claim.
    • Step 5

If you need access to your credit, be prepared for delays. You will need to send a certified letter to each bureau, along with the supporting documentation you sent when making the original request. This may take a few weeks to process.
    • Skill: Moderate
    • Tip: If you don't need your credit to be locked down but want added protection, contact the Nationwide Consumer Credit Reporting Company. Ask that a fraud alert be posted to your account, which makes it much harder for someone to get credit using your name.
    • Warning:
    • If you're planning on purchasing a car or house, complete these transactions before freezing your credit. Because once your credit is frozen, it's a lengthy process to get access.
