Before you decide on what type of fence you want to build, you'll need to first use a measuring tape to find out the length and width of your yard. You'll also need to decide if you want your fun fence to run around the entire diameter of your yard. If not, you can just put up a line fence along one side, such as the back, of your yard.
Now comes the fun part: how about a fence that is made out of wooden skids? Skids, which are often called "pallets" too, are rectangular wooden pads. They are made with strong wooden slats on each side, with thick spacing blocks in between the rows of slats. Skids are most commonly used for commercial shipping purposes. Often, local manufacturing companies give these pallets away for free just to get rid of an excess of them. So, you can check your local yellow pages for the names and phone numbers of local manufacturing plants. Then, call each plant to see if they are offering free skids or pallets.
To figure out how many skids you'll need, just divide the length, width, or diameter of your yard by three feet. This will give you an approximate number since skids aren't always uniform in size.
After you have the main wooden materials, you'll need to use a shovel to dig a trench. This trench will be located wherever you want to build the fence at. The trench will need to be approximately eight inches wide and one to two feet deep.
Now, with the help of an assistant, position the skids upright in the trench one at a time. You can either place the skids so their sides are touching, or, you can leave a slight space in between each one. Just make sure that each one is standing up straight. Shovel the dirt back in around the end of the pallet, and tamp it down firmly.
Once you have your skid fence finished, you can decorate it any way you want! How about a popular patriotic theme? You can paint the skids red, white, and blue. Then, to add the finishing touch, you can attach a wooden star, (also painted in red, white, and blue), on each skid.
Another idea for a fun yard fence is to use rubber inner tubes from the inside of automobile tires.
This is another item that you can often get for free, just for the asking! Check your local yellow pages for the phone numbers of places that sell tires. You can also check your local junk yards too.
Once you get the inner tubes and fill them up completely with air, you'll need to enlist the help of an assistant. Then, start your decorative fence by setting a sturdy end post first. Then, attach one side of the tube to the post by using a decorative piece of cord. On the other side of the inner tube, attach another piece of cord, and tie it to a second tube. Keep repeating this process until your fence is as long as you want it to be! When you reach the other end, you'll need to set a second sturdy end post into the ground. Finally, tie the last inner tube onto that post.
To finish your fun fence, you can paint it or cover it however you wish! You can even plant ivy directly in front of it, and let the ivy grow up and around the inner tubes!
